Movie Mix-Up is a flexible ESL classroom activity that builds genre awareness and film vocabulary. Students read brief film descriptions and work individually or in groups to assign each one to a genre, or multiple genres, from a varied list including comedy, fantasy, thriller, and more.
The task encourages discussion and logical thinking. It’s perfect for introducing genre as a concept while supporting wider media literacy and classroom talk around theme, tone and structure. The activity can be run using genre cards for a matching task or as a quieter written version using a genre table. Optional speaking extensions and follow-up creative tasks are also included.
A versatile activity that’s easy to adapt and packed with familiar films your learners are likely to know (and argue about).
This resource is also part of our Music & Film | EFL Resource Pack, which is available to download here.
