British Pop Text and Writing Task is a creative ESL resource built around a fictional first-person monologue. Written in the voice of an ageing music obsessive, the text reflects on the rise, fall and reinvention of British pop, from the optimism of the 60s to the media-driven stars of today.
Students first engage with the reading using discussion and comprehension prompts focused on tone, opinion and voice. They then use this as a model to write their own monologue: either reflecting personally on their own relationship with music, or writing in character from a different musical time or place.
The task supports style development, character voice and structured personal writing. It encourages learners to explore tone, perspective and how language reflects identity, all through the relatable lens of music.
This resource is also part of our Music & Film | EFL Resource Pack, which is available to download here.
Perfect For:
- Intermediate to advanced TEFL, ESOL and EAL learners aged 14+
- English writing lessons focused on voice, tone and perspective
- Analysing fictional texts with cultural context
- Exploring identity and personal storytelling through music
